Cat takes care outside the litter box

‘Does this cat get into the litter box?’

This is the basic question that every person who wants to adopt a cat from me asks me. The answer is always the same-in our country yes, but I can not guarantee that in the future it will be the same. Each of the owners is afraid that the cat will settle outside the litter box and the process of learning how to use the cat from the litter box is not so simple. Unfortunately, often, the cat settles out of the litter box and this is one of the most common and probably the most burdensome behavioral problems that a new cat caregiver has to face.

Why does the cat pee at home and how to deal with it?

To understand the root of the problem, we need to think about a few things. The basic thing we need to realize is that cats are not malicious! Yes, this is the most common stereotype about cats, which, doing something not according to the caregiver, immediately get the label of an ulcer. From this point on, all I wanted to say was that cats don’t do things out of spite. All the behaviors of the cat, which by us people are unwanted, usually have some explanation, and to our indisputable duties, it is necessary to get to the cause of the occurrence of this behavior. The reasons may be millions, but there is a certain group that occurs most often.

Why does the cat get out of the litter box?

Cystitis in a cat

One of the reasons that the cat settles outside the litter box is cystitis. To check if your cat is struggling with cystitis, you need to take his urine and go with him to the vet. Very often cats do not feel well, they have cystitis or other ailment, and the only way they show it is just getting out of the litter box. Unfortunately, cystitis is quite common in cats, considering that they still get into the gravel, which lies in the litter for a week, two… it is an environment in which bacteria that promote diseases of the urinary system easily develop. In addition, unfortunately, the diet of cats, which is based on dry food is not conducive, and many cats in their bowls get only dry crunches. In addition to the fact that the cat settles outside the litter box, with cystitis, you may also notice an increase in the frequency of urination in your cats. This is also a very clear symptom of this condition. A peeing cat can be just a sick cat, so do not wait too long and go to the vet.

Good gravel for the cat

Think about whether the gravel for the cat, which you are currently using it corresponds to or whether recently you have not changed the type, company of gravel? Gravel can have a smell that can be irritating to the cat. Sometimes even the same company, but a different kind may be unacceptable for a cat. Silicone grit can have too small or too large granules that can hurt the cat in the shingles or get between them and the cat may not want to get into it. The cat pees at home because, because of the pain, he does not want to enter the litter box. Pebbles for the cat are different and the choice depends on the preferences of the cat. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to the behavior of the cat because it can first enter the litter box, because of the wrong gravel discourage you. Then the cat will get out of the litter box in an unwanted place by us.

Here are the types of pebbles for the cat

  • corn gravel for cat
  • concrete gravel for cat
  • wooden gravel for cat
  • silicone grit for cat

Too rarely cleaned litter in the cat or change of litter in the cat

Cats are very clean animals. Dirty gravel does not encourage them to use it, so they often choose clean bedding instead. The litter boxes should be cleaned daily, if not more often, and the whole gravel should be replaced every week or two. When replacing the gravel, the litter box should be washed in order to eliminate the unpleasant odor and rid of bacteria and viruses.

Too small or too large cat litter

Cats grow, they get sick, they get old. Not always the litter box, in which they got along so far must still be good. Older cats may, for example, begin to suffer from joints, and the current litter may be too much of a challenge for them. Young cats grow up, and as a result, they need larger litter boxes.

Indoor cat litter

Lid on the indoor litter box – oh yes, indoor litter boxes are unfortunately quite a challenge for many of our cats. They’re comfortable for humans, but not really for cats. Some, yes, have no problems with them, but others just do not want to go into them. It happens that the cat settles outside the indoor litter box, for example, after several years of using it. For us it is not logical, but cats are not people and think a little differently. Anyway, if you have an indoor litter box, and the cat gets out of the litter box, the first thing you do is take the lid off.

The appearance of something over the litter box for the cat

For example, a towel rack in the bathroom, a picture on the wall, a shelf-the cat may have the impression that when he enters the litter box, something will suddenly fall on his head. A peeing cat likes to be calm, so it is often recommended to put a litter box in places isolated from everyday life, but where the cat can freely get in, out and has air movement. If you hang something over the litter box, it may be an impassable barrier for a peeing cat – look around and see if something like this has appeared in the vicinity of the litter box.

Trauma that causes the cat to pee outside the litter box

The cat may have suffered a trauma / has a bad experience associated with the litter box-for example, he entered the litter box, and at that time a firecracker exploded outside the window and our sensitive person was so frightened that he no longer wants to enter it, because he linked these two situations. Cats are very good at combining stimuli with the situation-do your cats also run to the kitchen at the very sound of opening the cupboard with food? Do they hide on the couch as soon as they hear you’re pulling out the vacuum cleaner? The same can be in this situation-cats are sensitive creatures. We may not even notice it, but let’s be aware that such a situation could have taken place.

Changes in the life of a cat

Think if nothing has changed in the life of a cat, for example, you moved the chair on which he loves to sleep, changed the time of eating, moved … cats are animals that like routine as much as small children. Changes in the daily rituals of the day can be stressful for them, and the result of this can be just getting the cat out of the litter box. The cat settles out of the litter box not only under the influence of one-time changes, but also because several things have changed in his life. Let’s try to be understanding and make changes gently, so as to minimize stress as much as possible.

The cat is taken out of the litter box when someone visits the House

Maybe your cats are afraid of children, and such recently visited you? Perhaps you had a visit from someone with a low voice, and such a voice raises a lot of nerves in your cat? Pay attention to whether the cat pees when someone comes. If so, try to calm your cat, so as to equalize his mental state. The way you should act depends on the situation that is causing the pee outside the litter box and the nature of the cat.

How to teach a cat to use a litter box

This is the subject of the river, but personally explaining to someone how to deal with a pissing cat, I always say that you can imagine that you are a young parent, and the cat is our child. Unfortunately, often cats are weaned too early. Unfortunately, they often spend their childhood outside, where there is no restriction of space, and the litter box is for them the entire floor area. Therefore, “closing” a cat in four walls and learning to use a litter box, unfortunately, often resembles trying to teach a child to use a potty. A young cat needs to be put in a litter box and shown that this is the place where it should be dealt with. Cats, fortunately, have a natural need to bury their droppings, which is why the litter boxes are perceived by them as a place to settle in. Unfortunately, small cats often forget to run and play at home. Then they can not aspire and get settled out of the litter box. Therefore, at the beginning of your adventure with a cat, it is worth to set up several litter boxes throughout the house, so that the cat always had to her close. Over time, of course, you can reduce their number, while observing the behavior of the cat.

If you see a cat peeing in the wrong place at home, get him out of there and put him in the litter box. Do not let him do it, for example, on the bed, but at the same time try to remain calm. If you start yelling at the cat, splashing it with water or doing other things that, unfortunately, are often the outlet of your frustration – you will only make matters worse. Remember that the cat is not allowed to shout or do anything that could cause him stress, especially in the course of an activity such as dealing with. About the techniques of learning a cat and how to work with him, I will write in another post.

Here are the little two “peepers”, with whom at the beginning of our joint adventure, I had to go through more than one peeing bed, “accidents” during the game and wet mess. Was it worth it? yeah, no question.

Getting rid of the cat outside the litter box and the importance of the territory by the cat

Cats mean territory-they definitely do. Cats mean territory? Of course I do! Much less often, but it also happens in the case of cats. Do not be fooled by the fact that the cat should be 6 months to castration. Every cat, just like a human, is different. Each organism matures at a different rate. This is influenced by genetic conditions, the environment and many other factors. If your cat or cat will get out of the litter box before the age of six months, you must go with him to castration. I know vets who will tell you it’s too soon, but please don’t listen to them. Do not let the hormones start raging in the blood of your pet, because this will result in the fact that the cat’s pee in the house will last long after the procedure. Remember that the procedure itself is often not enough for the cat to stop getting out of the litter box. It takes a ‘moment’ that sometimes lasts a few days, and sometimes a few weeks, for the hormones mentioned earlier to stop swimming in the bloodstream of your cat.

How to get rid of the smell of cat urine-means to neutralize the cat’s pee

Means for getting rid of the smell of cat urine on the market are many. However, remember that getting rid of the smell of urine is only to combat the effects, and you need to work on the cause. If you already know how to deal with a pissing cat and can help him, help yourself and buy something that perfectly neutralizes the smell of cat pee.

If, despite reading the article and your reactions, the cat continues to get out of the litter box, I would advise you to contact an animal behaviorist who will help you deal with this problem. Sometimes it happens that a person staying with an animal does not see as much as a person coming from outside.

Remember that eliminating the cause of the problem-whether it’s getting the cat out of the litter box or other tiresome behavior-is only the first step to success. The main thing is to act quickly, in order to prevent the perpetuation of the behavior of the cat. If this behavior gets into the habit of the cat, you will have to work not only to deal with the cause, but also to get rid of the habit, and this is already a more difficult matter. Therefore, remember that if you can not cope on your own, contact an animal behaviorist who will help you and improve the life of both you and your pet.
